The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 purify your garments; 4 stay away from sins 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And children present [with him] 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
