A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
