He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 For him who does not care, 5 you attend to him, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and who has fear of God, 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what has God created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 to yield therein corn, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
