The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise and warn, 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And children present [with him] 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 He planned and plotted. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
