[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 124 I am for you an honest Messenger. 125 So fear God and listen to me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Do you build high palaces on every high place, while you do not live in them? 128 and erect huge palaces as though you will live for ever, 129 And when you strike, you strike as tyrants. 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has given you all the things you know. 132 He has given you flocks and sons, 133 And gardens and watersprings. 134 indeed, I fear for you the torment of an awful day." 135 They said: "It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach. 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 And we are not going to be tormented. 138 Eventually they gave the lie to him and We destroyed them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 139 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 140
