He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 to him thou attendest 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted, pure. 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And his mother and his father 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
