The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
