The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise, and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
