The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 in which you are now living 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
