The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 And the heaven and Him Who made it, 5 By the Earth and its (wide) expanse: 6 By the soul, and That which shaped it 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 those who purify their souls will certainly have everlasting happiness 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
