The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
