The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Laam-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 The Roman Empire has been defeated- 2 in the nearer part of the land; and, after their vanquishing, they shall be the victors 3 In a few years (less than ten). God's is the imperative first and last. On that day the believers will rejoice 4 at the victory granted by Allah. He grants victory to whomsoever He pleases. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate. 5 This is Allah's promise; and Allah faileth not His promise. Yet most men know not. 6 They know but the outer (things) in the life of this world: but of the End of things they are heedless. 7 What, have they not considered within themselves? God created not the heavens and the earth, and what between them is, save with the truth and a stated term; yet most men disbelieve in the encounter with their Lord. 8 Do they not travel in the land, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength, and they tilled the earth and populated it in greater numbers than these (pagans) have done, and there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs. Surely, Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves. 9 Then the end of those who committed evil was evil, for they belied the signs of God, and they derided them. 10
