These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 neither cool nor good. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
