Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
