The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
