The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Indeed your efforts differ. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
