The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 He created man from a clot of blood. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 What will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!? 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 A lying, sinning forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
