O PROPHET! Say unto thy wives: "If you desire [but] the life of this world and its charms - well, then, I shall provide for you and release you in a becoming manner; 28 but if you desire God and His Apostle, and [thus the good of] the life in the hereafter, then [know that,] verily, for the doers of good among you God has readied a mighty reward!" 29 O wives of the Prophet, whosoever of you commits an act of clear shamelessness, her punishment will be doubled. This is how (the innate law of) God works inevitably. 30 ۞ But she who obeys Allah and His Messenger and does good works shall be doubly recompensed; for her We have made a generous provision. 31 Wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women. If you fear God, do not be too soft-spoken in case the ill-intentioned should feel tempted. Speak in an appropriate manner. 32 Stay in your homes and do not flaunt your charms as in the former times of ignorance. Attend to your prayers, pay the zakat and obey God and His Messenger. Women of the [Prophet"s] Household, God seeks only to remove all impurity from you, and to make you completely pure. 33 Remember God's revelations and the wisdom that are recited in your homes. God is indeed all perceiving, well-informed. 34
