He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him thou attendest 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and who has fear of God, 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted, pure. 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
True are the words of God the Almighty.
