The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
