If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him. 36 And verily they hinder them from the way, whilst they deem that they are rightly guided. 37 And when he comes before Us, he shall say: 'Would that there had been between me and you, the distance of the two Easts' Evil is the companion. 38 When ye have done wrong, it will avail you nothing, that Day, that ye shall be partners in Punishment! 39 Canst thou (Muhammad) make the deaf to hear, or canst thou guide the blind or him who is in error manifest? 40 We shall punish them whether We take you away, 41 or We shall show you what We have promised them; for surely We have complete power over them. 42 So, hold fast to the Book that has been revealed to you, you are surely on the right path, 43 and, verily, this [revelation] shall indeed become [a source of] eminence for thee and thy people: but in time you all will be called to account [for what you have done with it]. 44 Ask Our Messengers whom We sent before you if We have ever made gods, other than the Merciful, to be worshipped. 45
