A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left. O Companions of the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Consider the fire that you strike. 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
