Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
