a large group of the earlier people 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
