۞ AND, INDEED, long before [the time of Moses] We vouchsafed unto Abraham his consciousness of what is right; and We were aware of [what moved] him 51 when he said to his father and his people, 'What are these statues unto which you are cleaving?' 52 They said: we found our fathers the worshippers thereof. 53 He said: 'Truly, you and your fathers are in clear error' 54 They exclaimed, "Have you brought the Truth or are you joking?" 55 He said: "Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them and of that I am one of the witnesses. 56 And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs. 57 So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question]. 58 They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer. 59 Some among them said, “We heard a youth speak ill of them – the one called Ibrahim.” 60 Their chiefs said, "Bring him before the eyes of the people and let them testify that he has spoken against the idols." 61 They asked, "Abraham, did you do this to our idols?" 62 'No' he replied. 'It was their great one amongst them that did it. Ask them, if they are able to speak' 63 So they turned to themselves and said: "Verily, you are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers)." 64 Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): "Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!" 65 Said [Abraham]: "Do you then worship, instead of God, something that cannot benefit you in any way, nor harm you? 66 Woe to you for what you worship instead of God. Have you no understanding?" 67 They said: Burn him and help your gods, if you are going to do (anything). 68 'O Fire' We said, 'be coolness and safety for Abraham' 69 They wished to entrap him, but We made them greater losers. 70 and We delivered him, and Lot, unto the land that We had blessed for all beings. 71 We granted him Isaac and Jacob as a gift and helped both of them to become righteous people. 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge and delivered him from the city which practiced abomination. They were indeed a wicked people. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
