In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 Keep vigil the night long, save a little - 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 Behold, We shall cast upon you a Weighty Word. 5 Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah). 6 Indeed you have a lot of matters during the day. 7 But [whether by night or by day,] remember thy Sustainer's name, and devote thyself unto Him with utter devotion. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 Leave those to Me who deny, the lovers of ease and comfort; and bear with them for a while. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have sent an Apostle to you as a witness against you, as We had sent an apostle to the Pharaoh. 15 However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution. 16 Then how can you avoid the punishment, if you disbelieve, on a Day that will make the children grey-headed (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)? 17 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
