A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how those of the left hand -- 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
