The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
