The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 He created man from a clot. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 taught man what he did not know! 5 Despite this, the human being still tends to rebel 6 As he bethinkest himself selfsufficient. 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 Have you seen the one who forbids 9 a servant [of God] from praying? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will call the guards of hell. 18 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. ۩ 19
