The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it descends, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
