He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came unto him a blind man. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 How We pour water in showers 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 olives, dates, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 but others will be gloomy 40 with darkness overspread: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
