The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
