We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 So when he brought Our signs to them, they started mocking at them! 47 And not an Ayah (sign, etc.) We showed them but it was greater than its fellow, and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn [from their polytheism to Allah's Religion (Islamic Monotheism)]. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 Or am I better than this man, who is contemptible and scarcely makes things clear? 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 So when he had brainwashed his people, they followed him; indeed they were a disobedient nation. 54 When at length they provoked Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
