The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 Purify your inner self, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
