A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islam). 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
