The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
