The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
