The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
