The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
