a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
