The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night enshrouding 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
