۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 when he said to his father and his people, 'What are these statues unto which you are cleaving?' 52 They replied: "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said: "Indeed you and your fathers have been in manifest error." 54 They said: "Are you expressing your true ideas before us or are you jesting?" 55 'No' he answered, 'your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Originator of them, and I am among those bearing witness to it. 56 And by Allah I shall surely devise a plot against your idols after ye turned away backward. 57 Then he broke them all into pieces, sparing only the supreme one among them that they may possibly return to him. 58 They said: Who has done this to our gods? Most surely he is one of the unjust. 59 They said: We heard a youth make mention of them, who is called Abraham. 60 [The others] said: "Then bring him before the peoples eyes, so that they might bear witness [against him]!" 61 They said, “Did you do this to our Gods, O Ibrahim?” 62 He said: rather he hath wrought it, this big one of them; so question them, if they ever speak. 63 So they returned one to another saying, 'Surely, it is you who are the harmdoers' 64 Then they were made to hang down their heads: Certainly you know that they do not speak. 65 Said [Abraham]: "Do you then worship, instead of God, something that cannot benefit you in any way, nor harm you? 66 "Fie upon you, and upon the things that ye worship besides Allah! Have ye no sense?".. 67 They said, “Burn him and help your Gods, if you want to.” 68 We said to the fire, "Be cool and peaceful (with Abraham)". 69 And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. 70 And We saved him and Lot [and brought them] to a land which We had blessed for all people, 71 And We bestowed upon him Ishaque (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya'qub (Jacob). Each one We made righteous. 72 And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds and the right establishment of worship and the giving of alms, and they were worshippers of Us (alone). 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge and delivered him from the city which practiced abomination. They were indeed a wicked people. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
