A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
