And they ask you about Zulqarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him. 83 We established him in the land, and gave him the means to achieve all things. 84 Then he followed a way. 85 Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it going down into a black sea, and found by it a people. We said: O Zulqarnain! either give them a chastisement or do them a benefit. 86 He said: As for him who doeth wrong, we shall punish him, and then he will be brought back unto his Lord, Who will punish him with awful punishment! 87 "But whoever believes, and works righteousness,- he shall have a goodly reward, and easy will be his task as We order it by our Command." 88 Then he set out on another expedition 89 until, when he reached the rising of the sun, he found it rising upon a people for whom We had not appointed any veil to shade them from it. 90 Thus indeed it was. We had full knowledge of him. 91 Then he followed a way 92 Till, when he came between the two mountains, he found upon their hither side a folk that scarce could understand a saying. 93 They said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Lo! Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them? 94 He said, “That which my Lord has given me control over is better, therefore help me with strength – I shall set up a barrier between you and them.” 95 Bring me ingots of iron!" Then, after he had [piled up the iron and] filled the gap between the two mountain-sides, he said: "[Light a fire and] ply your bellows!" At length, when he had made it [glow like] fire, he commanded: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour upon it." 96 And thus [the rampart was built, and] their enemies were unable to scale it, and neither were they able to pierce it. 97 [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true." 98 ۞ On that Day, We shall let them surge against each other like waves and then the Trumpet will be blown and We shall gather them all together. 99 and upon that day We shall present Gehenna to the unbelievers 100 Unto those whose eyes had been under a covering from My remembrance, nor had they been able to hear. 101
