The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
