The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
