Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
