Indeed We sent Moses with Our Signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He told them: “I am a Messenger of the Lord of the Universe.” 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 "And then - why have no golden armlets been bestowed on him? or why have no angels come together with him?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 When at length they provoked Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
