a large group of the earlier people 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
