Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
